PAW PRINT coaster

Free Crochet Chart

by Scattie Crochet

I recently created this paw print design that I could use in my crochet. I love creating crochet for my pets and so I am expecting to get a lot of use out of this design.

These Paw Print Coasters work up quickly and are a great stash buster. They are great for adding a splash of colour to protect your surfaces. Not only are they colourful and decorative, but they are functional too.

The coasters are worked from the bottom up in rows, then a border is added around at the end. I used tapestry crochet for the paw print element and so worked my stitches over the yarn not in use, ready to pick up again when needed.

  • Hook size 4mm (G-6)

  • Scissors

  • Yarn needle (to weave in ends)

  • Blocking equipment

Measurements

Gauge: 9 sts x 9 rows = 2inches x 2 inches

Coaster size: approximately 4.5 inch x 47.5 inch (blocked)

Notes

  • This pattern is a free chart only but you can purchase the patten in my Etsy shop.

  • Chain 1 at the beginning of each row - this does not count as stitch. Apart from row 1, all rows begin in the stitch directly under the chain 1.

  • Each row has 17 stitches

  • All odd numbered rows are worked on the right side.

  • All even numbered rows are worked on the wrong side.

  • The whole pattern is worked in double crochet stitches (UK terms) or single crochet stitches (US terms).

  • Always ensure yarn is kept to the wrong side of the work after colour changes and when not in use.

  • For the paw print, the unused yarn colour is carried through. Stitches are worked over the carried yarn for the paw print element of the coaster only.

  • Blocking your completed coasters is suggested and helps them to hold their square shape.

Always change colours in the last pull through of the previous stitch by putting the new colour on your hook and pulling it through the two loops of the old colour on your hook. When you complete the colour change it counts as a stitch with the old colour as you are setting up the next stitch with the new colour.

For the paw print element, both strands of yarn (main colour Yarn A and contrast paw print colour Yarn B) are made available for use at the same time. The unused (inactive) colour is carried and hid under the stitches of the working (active) yarn, until it is ready to be used again.

When the right side is facing you, carry the inactive yarn behind the previous row’s stitches, under the active yarn stitches. When the wrong side is facing you, carry the inactive yarn in front of the previous row’s stitches, under the active yarn stitches.

Don’t pull the carried yarn too tight or let it hang too loose as it can distort your square’s finished appearance.

Colour Work

Crochet Chart

Begin with chain 17 +1 for turning in Yarn A, turn, and begin in the 2nd chain from the hook. End each row with a chain 1 and turn. All rows are 17 stitches.

Border

With the right side facing you and Yarn B, start anywhere on the bottom edge and work dc (UK terms) or sc (US terms) stitches along to the corner. Chain 1 and rotate a quarter turn then work dc (UK terms) or sc (US terms) stitches along into the 17 row ends. Chain 1 at the corner and rotate a quarter turn. dc (UK terms) or sc (US terms) into the top row stitches of row 17, chain 1 at the corner and rotate a quarter turn. Work dc (UK terms) or sc (US terms) stitches along into the 17 row ends, chain 1 at the corner and rotate a quarter turn. Work along the bottom edge and join with an invisible join to where you started the border.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Block your coasters so that they measure 4.5 inches x 4.5 inches square.
